Understanding why you put so much pressure on yourself, and how EFT tapping can help you ease the feeling that you're never doing enough.
Why do I always feel like I’m not doing enough, even when I’m trying my best?
If you often finish the day thinking about all the things you haven’t been able to do, rather than acknowledging everything you’ve accomplished, you might find yourself wishing you had more time or wondering whether you could have done things differently. Nothing seems to be enough.
You might be working hard, looking after your children, chasing a paycheque, or trying to keep up with all the demands of everyday life. And yet, somehow, you still feel like you could have done more or done better.
Why do I always feel like I'm not doing enough?
Instead of acknowledging everything you’ve ticked off your list, your attention goes straight to what’s left undone. And even when the day is over, you struggle to fully rest.
Have you noticed that even when you achieve something, the satisfaction doesn’t last very long? You reach a goal or finally move past a plateau, but instead of enjoying the moment, you start wondering how you could have done better.
It’s a bit like playing a video game. As soon as you complete one level, you’re already thinking about the next. There’s always something else to achieve, and you seldom take the time to appreciate how much your efforts have paid off.
Enough is never enough. And if you’re someone who likes to do things well, you’ll always find something you could have done better, even when the results are there. It’s a feeling of perpetual dissatisfaction: no matter how hard you try or how much you achieve, you are not ready to give yourself credit for it.
The problem isn’t that you’re not doing enough. It’s that you’re struggling to recognise when what you’ve done is enough.
Why is it so hard to feel you've done enough?
There isn’t one simple explanation for why we put so much pressure on ourselves. It can come from what we’ve learned to believe about our worth, how much we’re responsible for, and our own idea of what it means to be successful.
You have to earn your worth
Perhaps you’ve always been someone who tries hard, gets things done and wants to do the right thing. You may have learned to feel proud of yourself when you achieve something, help someone or meet other people’s expectations. Over time, you can start to believe that your value depends on how much you do. And when you’re not being productive, it’s hard to relax without feeling guilty or worrying that you’re being lazy. But you don’t have to earn your worth through your achievements. You can be ambitious and motivated without expecting yourself to be productive every moment of the day.
You're afraid of getting things wrong
You might put a lot of pressure on yourself to get things right, worrying about what might happen if you make a mistake. Even when you’ve worked hard and done a good job, you may find it difficult to feel satisfied because you’re too busy thinking about what you could have done better. You might keep going over decisions you’ve made, wondering whether you should have done things differently. When you’re afraid of getting things wrong, it’s hard to recognise when you’ve done enough.
You feel responsible for everything
If you’re juggling work, looking after your kids and keeping on top of the housework, you might find it difficult to accept that you can’t do everything. You may feel that you should be able to manage all your responsibilities, even when there simply isn’t enough time to fit everything in. And when things get left undone, you can end up blaming yourself rather than recognising that you’re only human and your time and energy have limits.
How to stop feeling like you're never doing enough
You don’t need to change the way you do things all at once. Start by paying attention to how you treat yourself when things don’t go to plan, and try setting more realistic expectations. You could make two lists at the start of your day: one for the things that really need to get done and another for the things you’d love to accomplish if you have the time. That way, you can focus on what matters most without feeling frustrated with yourself if you don’t get around to everything else.
Acknowledge what you’ve done so far
Try to get into the habit of looking back on your day and giving yourself credit for what you’ve done.
Ask yourself: What have I managed to do today that I can feel proud of?
It doesn’t have to be something big. Perhaps you remained calm in a stressful situation or handled something that you would normally find difficult. Look for those small achievements that you might otherwise overlook, and take a moment to appreciate them. This doesn’t mean you have to forget about the tasks that you can do later. It’s about feeling good about what you’ve achieved and giving yourself a pat on the back for all your efforts today.
Set realistic expectations
When you have a lot to do, both at work and at home, it can feel natural to expect yourself to get through everything in one day. Instead, take a moment to think about your priorities and what can wait until another time.
Ask yourself: What can I realistically get done today, given the time and energy I have? Look at your diary, scheduled appointments and workload before deciding what you can reasonably fit into your day.
Some days you’ll manage to get more done than others, and there will be times when things don’t go according to plan. That doesn’t mean you haven’t done enough. Give yourself permission to adjust your expectations rather than pushing yourself to do more than you can manage.
Progress is progress, no matter how small. Even a small step forward counts.
Letting go with EFT tapping
If you struggle with the feeling that you haven’t done enough and don’t deserve to sit down and rest, EFT tapping can help you work through the guilt and pressure you feel.
EFT tapping involves focusing on what’s bothering you while gently tapping on a series of points on your face, hands and upper body. It isn’t about forcing yourself to think positively. Instead, you acknowledge how you feel and work with the emotions that come up in that moment.
For instance, if you feel guilty whenever you take a break, even when you’ve been working hard all day, tapping can help you explore that guilt and the thoughts and experiences connected to it. This can help you understand where those feelings might come from and begin to ease their hold on you.
If you’d like to try tapping for this specific issue, I’ll be sharing a separate EFT tapping exercise to help you work through the feeling that you’re never doing enough.
You are doing enough
You may not get everything done, and there will always be something else to work towards. This doesn’t mean you haven’t done anything at all today. You can keep pursuing your goals while learning to appreciate your efforts and be kinder to yourself.
Until next time, take a moment to appreciate how much you’ve done.
